My guess is a vaginal, cervical, or pelvic infection (trichomonas, yeast, chlamydia, gonorrhea, non-STD cervicitis, etc) and the exam or specimen collection stirred things up, causing additional inflammation that brought this to light or made minor symptoms (previously missed) more obvious.
