In brief: Problems rare

The great majority of Mirena (levonorgestrel) users have either minor temporary side effects or none at all.
The most common side effect is that menstrual cycles can be irregular for the first several months, with sometimes days or weeks of irregular spotting. This goes away in most patients and the main thing noted by most is a significant reduction in menstrual bleeding, sometimes to where none occurs at all!
