I have genital hsv-1. Via unprotected sex, what are the chances of transmitting HSV a) orally and b) genitally to someone who does not have it?

In brief: Must be carefull

First recognize and be honest with partners.
To really protect them, use condom. Too shorten your course, need to take antiviral ie Acyclovir or valcyclovir. Most important is to recognize when you are getting a flair and act accordingly. For oral lesions, refrain from any oral sex or kissing. Virus can shed even before you realize you have outbreak. Advise talking to std clinic for help.

In brief: Very high

Even if you don't have any signs of an outbreak, it is possible to transmit the virus.
Please use protection and avoid any sexual contact during an outbreak. Consider taking anti-viral agents (by prescription) to prevent recurrences.

In brief: Herpes 1 and 2

95% plust percent of hsv 1 is found in the peri-oral area of the infected human.
And about 95 % of those with hsv 2 is found somewhere between the belly button and the thighs in an infected person. It is now known that it is impossible to predict when you are most contagious. You may be contagious even when you have no sores. Herpes knowledge is all different now. Please keep asking....
