As an anesthesiologist with near 30 years of experience, I can reassure you that "better" is often translated into "safer." Both types are extremely safe for a 31 yr old, without other health problems. Mortality rates for healthy, young males like yourself: 0.1 - 0.7 % for gen'l anesthesia, rates for nerve trauma, chronic pain or death with spinal: 1: 100,000. Our meds & techniques are very safe.
