In brief: Please see below

If your 3 yr. old has high fever, get him/her seen at the Dr. If flu is present, it's recommended to treat with Tamiflu (oseltamivir) if someone is under 5 years old and has symptoms less than 48 hours.
If he/she doesn't have flu,the Dr. still needs to evaluate to find the source for the high fevers. For you, if you have any history of asthma or other significant chronic medical condition, you need testing too.

In brief: Flu

Influenza usually presents with high fever, upper respiratory symptoms, muscle aches, headaches.
This is the time of year that you see a lot of influenza cases. Although you certainly will not feel good with the flu, in most healthy people it will not lead to hospitalization or mortality.
