In brief: VNS surgery

is done as an outpatient under general anesthesia.
The procedure takes about an hour. Two incisions are made, one just under the collar bone on the left for the device (it is placed under the skin on top of the muscle). A second incision is made in the neck to attach the lead to the vagus nerve in the carotid sheath. The device is tested before plastic surgery is done to close. Home in 2-3 hrs.

In brief: General Anesthesia

The implantation of a vagal nerve stimulator is done for a variety of reasons.
It has been used for seizures and depression. From the patient's point of view the surgery results in a small incision under the left clavicle, and one in the neck. The stimulator and its scar looks very similar to the one used in pacemakers. Usually a general anesthetic is used for the procedure.
