In brief: Carefully

Weight loss for you is the same as for a non-diabetic: lower caloric intake and increase physical activity.
However, i'm glad you asked, bc as a type 1 diabetic, doing those things will require you to change your Insulin regimen. Work with a dietician to make a balanced, carbohydrate consistent meal plan. Work with your endocrinologist for alterations in your Insulin regimen for work-out days.

In brief: Medically supervised

Diabetes is a serious disease and it is best to follow in a medically monitored program. Physician guidance can help monitor the sugars and blood pressure changes that can occur in a weight loss program.
Also the use of appetite suppressants maybe used which have to be monitored. Insulin levels will need to be adjusted with exercise. Get help so you won't have complications.

In brief: Eat a lot less.

Eat less - count your carbs very carefully - use less Insulin - exercise everyday - get your hba1c below 6.
5%. An overweight type one is not good.

In brief: Exercise

The best way is like with any other condition, diet and exercise.
Specially the exercise on the regular basis with help decrease the Insulin dose and by doing that you will have less appetite, eating less and requiring less insulin, like a vicious cycle.
