In brief: Heals over time

Knee microfracture surgery is a common procedure used to repair damaged knee cartilage.
Cartilage is the material that helps cushion and cover the area where bones meet in the joints.Physical therapy may begin in the recovery room right after your surgery. A machine gently exercises your leg for 6 to 8 hours a day for several weeks. Many people do well after this surgery, but recovery is slow.

In brief: Are you improved?

How far out from the surgery are you? It can take 12-18 months to fully heal from microfracture surgery.
Improvement is based on reduction of pain, improved range of motion, resolution of swelling and improved function. Be patient, follow your doctor and physical therapist's recommendations, and you hopefully will have an excellent result.

In brief: Less pain

You can also get an MRI 1-2 years after surgery to see if any new cartilage has grown.
