In brief: Some possibilities

Aphthous ulcers are breaks in the epithelium that in most cases have questionable origin.
Some are attributed to stress, viral or food allergy origins. Most common treatments are palliative and include some over the counter gels that contain some type of numbing agent. There are some prescription products that might lessen the duration and intensity of the ulcer.

In brief: Below

Often caused by trauma.
Toothbrush is common. Toothpastes with sodium lauryl sulfate can contribute. Can be caused by viruses. Auto-immune processes can cause these. Anbesol type products may help. Ocassionally tetracycline is used either topically or orally to help. There are "magic mouthwashes" that help (mixtures of antihistamines, maalox, steorids, others). See pcp if not resolving.

In brief: Unknown cause

These ulcerations in the oral cavity can be caused from autoimmune reactions, stress, allergies, medications or a virus.
If you are sleep-deprived or under stress, these lesions can occur. Reactions to tartar-control toothpaste can also cause these reactions. I recommend rest, fluids, avoid alcohol and spicy foods. If you can tolerate, nsaids lke advil (ibuprofen). If it persists over a week, see dentist.
