Is severe hip pain normal during pregnancy and is there anything that can be done besides suffer until the baby comes out?

No it's not. It can be bursitis. You can ask for ultrasound examination of your hip and a steroid injection if necessary.
It can occur. Sometimes the growing baby will irritate a nerve in your back when you are pregnant. Unfortunately, not a lot can be done while you are pregnant other than some stretching exercises and tylenol (acetaminophen). Yoga and physical therapy are excellent options.
Options. Ligamentous laxity of the pelvis, preparing for the baby's exit strategy, is a common cause of back and hip pain during pregnancy. During the first trimester, conservative care should be the mainstay of treatment but later, injections of local anesthetic +/- steroids into these sore areas, can be helpful and are usually quite safe.
