In brief: Yes
Herpes simplex virus is a common cause of cold sores.
Realize that there are several "varieties" of herpes viruses. The kind that cause cold sores are very common. They are contagious, so avoid kissing/intimate contact, sharing cups or utensils while you have one.

In brief: Maybe
It may be due to herpes, but more commonly, if it is on the inside of the cheek or on the gums it may be an aphthous ulcer. The cause is not known, but it is self-limiting and usually clears up within about 7 to 10 days.

cold sores from Herpes usually appear on lip/lip margins; topical med can help relieve symptoms & help it heal more quickly. aphthous ulcers/canker sores are inside the mouth. relief can be obtained from Orajel/Anbesol, mixture of warm salt water, peroxide, & Listerine swished around inside the mouth several times a day. Do NOT swallow this misture.
