In brief: Depends

If a fusion was done, it can take 12 weeks for enough bone healing to allow full activity.
If the ruptured portion was removed without fusion, there is usually enough healing after one month. Symptoms in both cases usually improve well before this. However, severe long standing symptoms may take longer.

In brief: Varies

It varies depending on the procedure and the severity of pre-operative symptoms.
For a foramenotomy/disc removal, the recovery may take about 4-6 weeks. A disc arthroplasty (replacement) is also associated with a short recovery. A fusion can take over 3-4 months to heal, and possibly longer if multiple levels were treated.
