As long as the man is able to ejaculate in the vagina, that is sufficient.
If couple unable to conceive within a year (6 months if women > 35 years old), couple should seek an infertility evaluation, which includes analyzing sperm characteristics with a semen analysis.

In brief: Masturbation

Masturbation alone will not cause infertility.
On the other hand, performed too frequently, it may deplete the sperm available for presentation in semen. A male trying to impregnate his wife should probably engage no more frequently than twice a day, and some suggest that it should be no more often than very other day.

As an easy guideline, I recommend 2 days of abstinence from any sexual activity leading up to ovulation (egg dropping) if you and your partner are testing for this. This allows the counts to be optimal. Being abstinent for more than 4-5 days might also adversely affect the sperm quality.
