In brief: Panic
The two kinds of treatments are medication and talk therapy.
There are also physical causes for panic attacks, and a good dr should be able to perform some tests to determine if there is a physical cause. You should avoid benzodiazepines like Valium and Xanax (alprazolam) as they are habit forming. Good luck to you.

Panic is fueled by oxygen.
When panicking u r getting too much! so try 2slow ur breathing! better yet, 2keep more carbon dioxide in ur system: cup ur hands & breathe in/out thru them. Do learn about panic. Some self-help strategies: http://bit.Ly/xjnhyf psychoeducation & cognitive behavioral therapy (cbt) can help u learn 2manage & even overcome panic & anxiety. Impt: see ur pcp 4physical workup.

In brief: Manage, not cure
True panic attacks are difficult to cure; we manage them. Therapy can help if there are fears under the surface that need to be addressed.
Attacks can be helped with beta blockers to reduce fast heart rate and shaking; xanax-type meds can worsen things if taken more than very rarely (say once every couple weeks). Ssris are the med of choice, usually in higher doses.
