What are the causes of heart attack?

Supply & demand. In simple terms, it is a mismatch between the supply of oxygen and nutrients to heart muscle and the needs/demands of the heart muscle. In effect, heart muscle suffocates. This can be caused by narrowed or blocked vessels (coronary arteries) limiting blood flow. Stress tests on treadmill increases work of heart and determine if you can increase supply to match demand.
Heart attack. A heart attack is typically caused by a blood clot forming on top of plaque inside a coronary artery (artery that supplies heart muscle). Factors that can contribute to this are smoking, high cholesterol, diabetes, high blood pressure, obesity and genetics. Other rare causes of heart attack especially in young patients include drugs, trauma, inflammation, congenital anomaly.
Clots. Simply put, a typical heart attack is when an area of the heart has decreased blood supply. This oftent happens when a plaque ruptures and a clot forms in the lumen of an artery resulting in injury to that specific area of the heart.
