In brief: Varies

It really is based upon the specific cause of the knee pain.
Don't hesitate to be seen for a specific diagnosis as to the source of your knee pain first.

In brief: Hmmm?

Depends why your knee pains you in the first place; initially i would not recommend any strenuous activity/exercise.
..Just rest it; maybe an ice pack. If you continue to suffer try a mild dose of Ibuprofen or tylenol (acetaminophen). If you are still without relief then please get to your doctor for a more detailed examination...Better to get the approrpiate diagnosis and correct treatment than trial and error.
