In brief: Honey in tea
Honestly, most studies have shown limited benefit from store-bought cough remedies.
In fact, when compared to lemon and honey in tea....Guess which was best, and safest. Yep, our moms and grandmothers were right!

In brief: Depends...
Best medicine for cough depends on the reason for the cough.
For example, if due to bronchospasm, inhalers would be indicated. If due to post-nasal drip, nasal sprays may be needed. If due to gerd, stomach meds may be needed. If due to acute bronchitis, over the counter or prescription cough meds may be indicated. A doctor would need to evaluate so proper treatment could be rendered.
