Trauma to the bone. Bone marrow edema is the bone respondence +to some traumatic event, not strong enough to produce a fracture but sufficient to create the bone respond.Treatment is the same than afracture that is rest and the use of a cam-walker to unload the calcaneous.
Type of fracture. A bone bruise or microtrabecular fracture can cause bone marrow edema on an mri. A few weeks of non-weight bearing is treatment. Ask your primary care physician or orthopedist. Other cause is bone infection, if there is any symptom of infection in the overlying tissues.

What does this mean? I have a small subchondral fracture deformity of the lateral trochlear facet with prominent bone marrow edema throughout the regi

Cartilage damage. Prominent marrow edema of the lateral trochlea means that the cartilage covering the bone in this area is injured or worn thin. This is a common place to develop arthritis which causes marrow edema when the cartilage gets too thin or is worn out and bare bone is exposed there. If you had a recent injury, it could be cartilage damage rather than arthritis. See your provider for recommendations. Read more...
