In brief: Salt water gargles
Depends how bad it is.
Simple gargling with salt water sometimes suffices. But if you have reddened throat, swallowing difficulty and fever, you may have strep throat, which needs antibiotics.

In brief: Supportive care
If it's due to a viral infection, antibiotics will not help; they are for bacterial infections (like strep).
Symptomatic relief can be had by frequently gargling with a mixture of warm salt water, hydrogen peroxide, and mouthwash or simply with warm salt water. Avoid alcohol as it dries throat more. Otc throat lozenges with Benzocaine can numb the discomfort a while. If pain persists, see doctor.

other "cough drops" with menthol &/or eucalyptus may also sooth the discomfort temporarily
