In brief: Also splints

Splinting the thumb is also very helpful.
If it is the base of your thumb, close to the wrist, a wrist and thumb splint, or a short opponens splint (pictured) will support and protect the painful joint.

Antiinflammatories can certainly help.
For the hands they have compression gloves you could try. Occupational therapy can help. For the thumb, a well placed cortisone injection in the joint can help. If you can find someone that does those under ultrasound guidance, even better.
