In brief: Exaggeration
Wheat is a carbohydrate.
It does not need to be avoided altogether, but should be eaten in small portions.

First avoid 'concentrated sweets' like candy, but your body needs carbs. The ADA (American Diabetic Assoc.) divides your plate in 1/4 carbs, 1/4 protein, 1/2 veggies

In brief: Not necessary
There is no one food that a diabetic should or should not eat.
All foods have their own glycemic indexes and can be worked into a proper diabetic diet. Get a program set up by a registered dietician. This should give you a balanced diet that will probably include some wheat products, but it will be properly set up.
