In brief: Why?

It is important to determine the factors contributing to the root exposure as well as the severity.
Root exposure is accompanied by bone loss. A periodontist is best suited to handle this and should complete a thorough assessment. Once you are informed of the options, you may feel differently. At 72, with no mobility to the teeth, your bone is likely good enough for many years.

In brief: Unpredictable graft

Gingival graft only help in esthetic and provided attached gingiva (if you are lacking them), not help to save further bone loss.
The best treatment in this case is deep clean, occlusal adjustment, good home care, follow up, and possible laser treatment (lanap). These procedures will stop the progression of bone loss. Good occlusion then will help to preserve your teeth for life time.

to determine treatment regimen, you need a full xray survey and exam of all soft and hard tissue, then decide on course of treatment

In brief: Depends on diagnosis

You need a periodontist to evaluate you teeth both clinically and on x-rays.
We cannot tell you the proper treatment w/ out a proper diagnosis. Your general dentist and periodontist need to work as a team here!

In brief: Severe periodontitis

You will need an exam and x-ray then a possible referral to a periodontist.
You are correct to seek treatment and to consider non extraction.
