A pet scan uses a marker that mimics glucose, which your body uses for energy.
Since cancer grows more rapidly than normal tissue, it takes up more glucose, which is detected on a pet scan. This why pet is used to look for cancer. Some slow growing tumors may not be detected on pet however.

True. But technically speaking PET scan is the camera use to produce the image. Most commonly PET scans are done with F-18-FDG (radioactive sugar). However, there are many other PET radio-tracers clinically approved or to be approved such as: F18-NaF (bone scans), Rb 82 (cardiac), F18-Florbetapir (Alzheimer's), F18-FLT (DNA synthesis), etc.
