In brief: Viral PCR

The most conclusive test is to swab an active lesion for a viral dna pcr test.
This is the most accurate and will detect active herpes virus. The problem is it must be done while a lesion is present. You should have a repeat hsv 2 igg done in 6 weeks. If you had acquired herpes then in 6 weeks your igg while convert to positive.

In brief: Quite simple

A person wondering if she caught herpes can see her doctor and ask for a lab order form to get the herpeselect igg test, which can tell the difference between type 1 and type 2 herpes.
Be happy to pay for the test if insurance won't pay for it. Then, wait 6-8 weeks and go do the test. Hopefully, type 2 will be negative. Type 1 can be neg or positive, as many normal people get type 1 oral herpes.
