What is the difference in symptoms between an umbilical hernia and an abdominal muscle strain?

In brief: Bulge

If you have a hernia then in addition to the pain you may also notice a swelling at your belly button (you now have an outie instead of an innie).
The other thing is a muscle strain will get better with time and rest. A hernia will stay the same or get worse until it is fixed with surgery.

In brief: Bulge

Both can cause localized abdominal pain.
With an umbilical hernia, there will also be a bulge at the belly button that usually gets larger with straining of the abdominal muscles or lifting heavy objects. The bulge usually can be pushed back into the abdomen when the patient is laying flat on their back. If you're not sure, a physician/surgeon can examine your abdomen and let you know.

In brief: Let me explain

A hernia occurs when the contents of a body cavity bulge out of the area where they are normally contained.
Abdominal muscle sprain means that muscle pulled and will and will go back in place, no bulge in out.
