In brief: Maybe

Gerd is usually controlled with lifestyle changes and medication.
There are some who are "cured" with certain surgical procedures which don't allow the stomach contents to reflux up into the esophagus. See your pcp or a gastroenterologist or a surgeon who specializes in this area. Surgery is usually reserved for those who cannot get control with medications or have other reasons.

In brief: Possibly

Successful surgical procedures prevent stomach contents from refluxing into the esophagus.
Many patients are happy to use medications intermittently and/or lifelong. Others prefer the potential for definitive surgical cure. The decision for surgery is one you should make after discussing risk/benefits of all treatment options. Link may help: http://goo.Gl/0rrqv.
