I have re-occurring bacterial vaginosis. I'm always prescribed Flagyl but it doesn't seem to help. What is a good antibiotic and ways to prevent it?

In brief: Chronic problems

May warrant an evaluation by a vaginitis specialist.
If hygiene modification and Flagyl gel or pill has not been working, then their expertise may be needed. Make sure infection has been ruled out. Your doctor can also check for ureaplasma and mycoplasma to see if these organisms are present. The treatment is different. Good luck!

In brief: See below

Bv is a synergistic infection involving gardnerella and a number of other, anaerobic bacteria.
It is treated with Metronidazole oral or intravaginal. Tinidazole and Clindamycin are alternatives. Oral and intravaginal probiotics containing lactobacilli can help. Recurrent disease is related to colonization of your sex partner, inconsistant condom use and is halved with estrogen contraceptives.
