In brief: Little

Usually one cup of wine or bear is ok.
If you will be drinking more, then pump and dump one time once sober, after you have been drinking. Make sure you feel sober before you resume nursing. There are commercially available "breast milk alcohol checkers" but it is usually not necessary to do this.

In brief: No safe amount

The safest answer is "none.
" any alcohol that a mother has in her system will be passed on to baby via breast milk; & there is no safe amount of alcohol for baby to consume. The best way to prevent this is to abstain from alcohol while breastfeeding. If you want to have a drink, wait at least 4-6 hours per drink before breastfeeding again to make sure you have completely eliminated the alcohol.

In brief: You choose

Your babies brain is adding new connections most rapidly in the first 2 years.
We know from cases of fetal alcohol syndrome that there is a direct toxic effect of the breakdown products of alcohol on babies brain, (formaldehyde is one byproduct), so any alcohol that gets to baby may produce some harm. Some fine groups have suggested a little is okay, but I've seen far too many ADD kids to say so
