In brief: Late 1800's
The term schizophrenia was actually used starting in the early 1900's but the illness was recognized as different from bipolar disorder as far back as the mid 1800's.
It was first considered a form of dementia, like alzheimers, that hit younger people. For that reason it was first called dementia praecox. However, the name schizophrenia became more popular in the early 1900's.

For anyone's interest, the Swiss psychiatrist Eugen Bleuler first coined the term, "schizophrenia," in 1911.

In brief: Many decades ago.
Not sure when schizophrenia was actually seen in this country, but certainly in other countries.
It was noted many decades ago when physicians started looking into this condition and focused on the separation between pulling away and disassociating with others. Many are loners, but others relialize that they are different and wonder if they will ever be as others like frequent helpful companions.
