In brief: Consult with your OB

In general, it is not recommended that one lose weight or diet during pregnancy.
Carrying a baby means providing him or her with all of best nutrients for development and growth. Dieting and losing weight would likely rob him or her of some of these nutrients. Consult with your ob, family doctor, or a registered dietician for specifics.

A healthy nutrition and mid to moderate exercise according to gestational age is good for the baby

But being at a healthier weight before you get pregnant is a good idea. Walking is a great way to exercise. If you're not doing it now, work up to 30-60 minutes a day 5 days a week. Most women should continue during their pregnancy unless advised to stop by their doctor. Eat lots of vegetables, fruits, and whole grains, cut back on solid fats, and watch portion sizes. See a nutritionist.
