In brief: 4-6 months

The american academy of pediatrics recommends exclusive nursing for the first 6 months of life, when possible.
Solid foods can be started as early as 4 months and should be started no later than 6 months. Most pediatricians recommend the infant cereals (rice, oatmeal, barley) as the first foods to introduce.

In brief: 6 months

Healthy babies can start on solid foods such as baby cereal at age 6 months.
Some parents start baby cereal between 4 and 6 months, and then other baby foods at 6 months. When starting solids, watch the baby to see if he can handle the food properly in his mouth. If the baby keeps pushing the food out, or chokes, or vomits, or gets constipated, then the parents can wait a month to try again.

We recommend waiting until 4-6 months till starting rice cereal.
Once your child has taken rice cereal without difficulty then introduce 1 new fruit or vegetable every 3-5 days. After several vegies you can introduce other types of cereal as well.

The aap recommends solids being started by spoon no earlier than 4 months.
I know of 2 exceptions. Some experts recommend cereal to thicken the milk for babies with acid reflux disease ( gerd ). And rarely some babies who are being fed too much formula seem to benefit from cereal earlier. Very, very few babies need cereal to sleep thru the night! that thought is generally and old wive's tale.
