In brief: Yes and no

Yes to the teeth whitening and no to the gum infection.
If you have gum infection, you need to see your dentist for treatment.

In brief: NO

Start with a dentist repairing the damage, at the same time do the following: 1) use a soft manual toothbrush.
2) place the brush where the teeth and the gum join together. 3) move the brush in circles. 4) do all teeth this way on the face side and the tongue side. 5) follow up with a water pik spraying water in circles same.

In brief: Basics

All dentists would agree that the least you can do is brush properly.
Why eliminate the obvious? The simplest way to keep your teeth and gums healthy and clean is to brush them. If you haven't brushed in a while, you should see a dentist or dental hygienist for a "jump start" and perhaps a lesson in how to achieve good oral hygiene.

In brief: Bacteria

Bacteria will always be in your mouth until you die, so perio or gum disease is always going to be.
.. So what't important is the managment, homecare, brushing, flossing, and keeping up with routine professional dental appointments...And if you have a major gum infection, such as a periodontal abscess, you need to see your dentist asap or a periodontist.

In brief: Many home remedies

There are many home remedies for gingivitis (gum infections) & tooth whitening.
Like most home remedies there is little if any research proving they work but i like this site where people who have tried different approaches share their experiences, both positive & negative: http://www.Earthclinic.Com/cures/gum_disease.Html the same site has a section on "teeth, stained." good luck!

In brief: No

If you have infected gums you really should be seen by a dentist and he or she will help with the tools and medications that you would need to treat the infected gums.

In brief: No, but....

You must see a dentist to diagnose your problem and explain the appropriate treatment.
For patients with gum line problems, i often recommend the perio protect method, which has a side-effect of whiter teeth. This system uses precise fitting soft trays that you fill with recommended medication & wear at home. Find a perioprotect certified dentist near you at www.Perioprotect.Com.
