I was told by my doctor that I have ibs. I have daily loose stools/diarrhea. Lately, my stool has been dark green or almost black. Why is that?

Diet and bile. The color of stool is quite variable and most often just reflects the interaction of the food you have eaten and your bile. Dark green is often normal. White, black and tarry or frank blood should be evaluated promptly but most other colors are not important.

Symptoms: dark loose stools, difficult/incomplete evacuation, severe abdominal distention from trapped gas, mucous. Diagnosed IBS. I think Proctitis?

Typical IBS symptoms. As you suspect, these symptoms indeed are consistent with irritable bowel syndrome. But they aren't particularly suggestive of proctitis (inflmmation of the rectum). Inflammatory bowel disease (e.g. Crohn's disease) can cause similar symptoms as IBS, and also can cause proctitis. So I suggest you raise these questions with the doctor who diagnosed IBS then follow her advice. Good luck! Read more...

I'm not pooping right for months now? But I haven't thrown up anytime? I've been having intermittent loose stools. I don't think its ibs! Help!

Loose stools. At your age group there are few things it maybe: ibs, ibd( inflammatory bowel disease), celiac disease, lactose intolerance or infection. By far the most common one is ibs. Diagnosis usually based on clinical criteria. Alarm signs need to be rule out: blood in the stool, weight loss, symptoms that wake one from sleep or family history of colon cancer. No alarm signs then colonoscopy not needed. Read more...

I've been having loose stools for a week. I don't feel sickly. Lots of gas and my BM are just off. I take probiotics. RX'd with IBS at 24. Worrying! ?

Don't worry yet. If you don't feel "sick" I'm less concerned about a dangerous pathological process, but something is going on and it should be evaluated. I would see a functional medicine physician or an integrative gastroenterologist. In our clinic we would begin by ordering a comprehensive digestive analysis test which would guide the recommended treatment. As said in functional medicine "Heal the gut"!! Read more...

Took MOM 2 days ago. Explosive loose stools yesterday. Today urge to go but can't. Increased fiber and water. What can I do? Is this IBS or serious?

Too much MOM. You may have taken too much MOM which contains Magnesium. Too much Magnesium can cause diarrhea. Too much fiber without lots of water can slow down your stool transport. Try to take Magnesium citrate 500mg every night. Drink 8-10 glasses of water daily with a fiber supplement. Aloe vera juice also helps. Read more...

I used to have right sided pain with IBS symptoms now It moved to my left side same symptoms, constipated then soft loose stools what can I do?

Confirm diagnosis... IBS can mimic many conditions, & vice versa. IBS is a diagnosis of exclusion, so an examination, a few simple tests, & assessment of symptom duration, intensity, location, quality, timing, etc. will clarify your course of action. Talk with your doctor please before self-diagnosing & self-treating. Read more...
