Hello. My daughter was born with spina bifida on 29th july 2012. Her head is slowly swelling. What determines when to have a shunt inserted?

Excessive size. A head circumference chart is a usual part of child care by pediatricians. If there is an indication of excessive head growth, a Cat scan or MRI should be done to determine why it is taking place. If there is indication of hydrocephalus, that is when a shunt should be done. There is a condition called familial macrocephalus which can be diagnosed with imaging, not requiring shunt.
Hydrocephalus . The presence of hydrocephalus ( fluid build up in the ventricles of the brain) will be the indicator for shunt implantation .
