Unless you're in a mutually monogamous relationship, use of birth control pills doesn't lower your risk of sexually transmitted diseases (stds).
Even regular use of condoms doesn't make your risk zero, it just improves your odds. Likewise, regular correct use of birth control pills doesn't make your risk of pregnancy zero, but does improve your odds. In general, wait at least a week after starting.
