In brief: Not necessarily

Colon cancer is one of many causes of anemia.
Likewise, some cancers never bleed, and do not cause it. Your gastroenterologist can determine if you need further work up or colonoscopy.

In brief: No

Colon cancer does not always cause anemia.
Best way to exclude it is colonoscopy. If that was negative then you should be in good shape.

In brief: Not always

Colon cancer does not always bleed.
Are you having blood in your stool? Do you have other symptoms, such as change in bowel habits or weight loss? Do you have a history of colon cancer or a family history of colon cancer? Your GI doctor probably made his assessment based also on negative answers to these questions.
