In brief: It Depends

The A1c is essentially a way to measure your average blood sugar (as if you are taking it all the time) for the past 2-3 mths.
There are ways to convert it to a sugar estimate which may be better to understand. If the A1c is in the nl or high nl range, it is mostly about lifestyle with exercise & a diet low in simple carbs. Based on Fam & risks maybe meds. If high or shows DM same & prob meds.

In brief: Good choices

Eat right (small portions, whole grains, lots of fruits and veggies).
Get moving 30-60 minutes every day. Maybe take medications. Congrats on wanting to make good changes. Good for you!

In brief: Diet/exercise & meds

Hemoglobin A1c can be reduced through good control of one's blood sugar for at least 3 months.
This is accomplished by a low sugar, low simple carbohydrate, high complex carbohydrate diet; regular cardiovascular and light weight training exercises, and medications if recommended by your physician.
