I put bactroban (mupirocin) on a healing cold sore. Was that a good idea?

In brief: NOPE, but not bad.

Mupirocin is an anti-biotic that kills or prevents the reproduction of bacteria--commonly used for staph infections.
Cold sores are caused by one of the strains of herpes simplex virus. Antibiotics will have no effect. You did no harm, but must be careful of the misuse of medications. Always check with your dr. Before using medications for other than its originally intended purpose.
