I have a cat and was told to stay away from the litter while pregnant (5 weeks). What are the risks & how strict is this? Should I stay awy from cat?

In brief: Depends
The number one cause of toxoplasmosis infections in the United States is undercooked meat.
...Not indoor cats. Cats that can transmit toxoplasomsis are outdoor cats.

In brief: Infection exposure
Simply stated, stay away from the cat litter for sure.
Moreover, it's about prevention and infection control.

Agree. The concern is for a disease in cat poop called toxoplasmosis. Just have someone else change out the litter or use gloves. You can still play with your cat.
