Are canker sores caused by the HSV 1 virus? Are they a form of HSV 1?

In brief: No

Canker sores (aphthous ulcers) are often confused with cold sores and are not the same.
The exact cause of canker sores is unknown although stress and injury are suspected factors. They are not contagious and appear only inside the mouth. Cold sores, or herpes simplex type 1, on the other hand, are groups of painful, fluid-filled blisters and are contagious. They most often occur on the outside lips.

They may then rupture and produce shallow ulcers, quite painful and tender, often with a white base.

In brief: Canker sores, no

is very common after tooth extraction.
Canker sores are the most common oral lesions. Individual ulcers typically last 1-2 weeks. The condition is idiopathic (cause is not known) recurrent aphthous ulcers is usually self-limiting. If concerned see your dentist after 10 days.

In brief: 2 different issues

Hsv 1 causes fever blisters which are sores that are usually outside the mouth, typically on the lips, chin, or nostrils.
Canker sores occur inside the mouth on the cheek linings, tongue, lips or throat. Acyclovir or Denavir (penciclovir) can shorten the duration of herpes induced fever blisters and steroids or topical anesthetics can help with canker sores but both have to run their course.
