My child just fell out of his baby chair and has a bloody nose. How can I tell if he has a broken nose? He's 11 months old. His crying has stopped

In brief: Hard to tell...

If the bleeding has stopped and he seems to be breathing ok, passing air from both nostrils, then i would say call his primary doc and notify them of the situation so they can make the call as to what to do next.
If he's still bleeding then get him seen asap by his doc or urgent care/ er. Hard to say if it's broken. Even an xray may not tell. Important thing is the bleeding and the breathing.

In brief: Fell on Nose

Most likely, there is a cut in the skin inside the nose.
An 11-month old has almost no bone in the external nose. A broken nose would be very unlikely, without a much more severe injury. The best way to tell if the nose is broken would be by physical exam showing the nose is crooked. Most broken noses in children under age 3 involve only cartilage -- they don't show up on x-rays.

In brief: Epistaxis

Bloody nose, bruised nose or eyes, or nasal obstruction are all signs of a nasal fracture.

In brief: Broken Nose?

An 11-month old's nose is nearly all cartilage.
A fall from a high chair, then a bloody nose likely means the skin inside the nose has a small cut. The bleeding should stop in about twenty minutes. If nasal stuffiness afterwards is severe, go see your pediatrician or family doctor so that his nose can be examined. X-rays are generally not helpful in this age.

In brief: Broken nose

It can be difficult to tell if the nose is broken without a thorough evaluation and x-ray.
This type of injury is unlikely to result in a broken nose however. There are a lot of blood vessels in the nose and any type of injury can cause a lot of bleeding. It may be a good idea to seek care from your pcp to have her checked out. If she lost consciousness that needs to be checked out right away.
