What are methods practised for staging papillary thyroid cancer? Not about my single fna test "suspicious for malignancy" (category 5) but more info.

In brief: Age, Tumor Size, LN
Staging of papillary thyroid ca is dependent on age (cutoff: 45), tumor size, lymph node involvement, and presence of cancer elsewhere in the body.
Most of this information requires surgical evaluation and post-op scanning before a definitive stage is reached. However, the chance for cure is very high with these types of cancer, especially when younger than 45.

In brief: Ultrasound / surgery
An ultrasound should be done preoperatively by an experienced radiology dept (or endocrine surgeon or endocrinologist) and suspicious nodes fna'd.
If ok proceed to a total thyroidectomy by an experienced endocrine surgeon. He/she will remove any suspicious nodes and possibly do a central node dissection if the tumor is large. Experience here matters a lot in terms of complications and reops.
