In brief: Hyperflexibility

If ligaments and tendons - the "ropes" that hold our joints together - are loose or weak, the joints can be more mobile, even to the point of popping out.
If it is is more than one joint, your doctor may want to check you for some connective tissue problems. Usually, however, this can be helped with physical therapy to strengthen the surrounding muscles.

In brief: Ligament laxity

Agree with dr nielsen.
Although not always desirable, some people are born with excess ligament laxity. They can usually hyperextend their elbows and fingers. It can be associated with underlying connective tissue disease and warrants medical evaluation by a rheumatologist. Most cases are benign and can be treated with therapy to stabilize the muscles around the joint. Rarely surgery is performed.
