Acute gout typically presents as the sudden onset of severe joint pain with redness, warmth and swelling in one joint, usually the big toe, that frequently begins at night or after mild trauma, and completely improves in 7-10 days. Over years to decades, chronic gout can develop with a decrease in the severity of pain, and increase in the number of joints involved and the duration of the pain.
Attacks in joints. The most common symptoms of gout are attacks of pain, redness, heat and swelling in joints. Attacks most commonly affect a single joint, the most common of which is the base of the first toe. Multiple joints are sometimes affected. The attacks usually last about a week, with full recovery. Other potential complications of gout which may cause symptoms are kidney stones and lumps under the skin.
