In brief: Vaccine & Avoidance

Prevention of contracting chicken pox is only through immunization or through avoidance of those who have chicken pox.
The difficulty with the latter is that there will be individuals who have chicken pox but have not yet exhibited symptoms who will be contagious (hard to avoid contagious individuals who don't yet show any symptoms.).

Consider a varicella titer blood test to see if you had chicken pox as a child and never realized it. A Positive titer indicates a prior exposure and immunity; an Negative titer indicates no prior exposure and susceptibility to the disease if exposed.

In brief: Vaccine

There is a vaccine to prevent chicken pox.
It can also help prevent shingles, which is caused by the virus as chicken pox, which usually occurs later in life.
