Agree with Dr. Cheng. Also suggest give Yoga a trial as it has helped many to get over back pain. Also accupuncture or transdermal electric nerve stimulators (TENS) unit which cost about $40 may help greatly.

I have a herniated disc at the same level; had severe pain initially and have never had weakness, therefore, have never had surgery; just lots of therapy.
