In brief: Snap, Crackle & Pop
This is actually somewhat common, but not a true "out of place" situation as you might believe.
It is extremely rare for a hip to dislocate spontaneously. This is a powerful joint for obvious reasons. What you feel is likely a snapping of a structure called the iliotibial band over the prominence of the thigh bone. This can be annoying and cause inflammation. Try icing and rest if irritated.

In brief: ? Snapping hip
Snapping hip syndrome is most common in females in their teens and twenties but can occur later in life and in men as well.
Tendons that cross or attach near the hip joint can 'slip' or 'pop' over bony prominences by the hip joint.'external snapping hip' can refer pain down the side of the leg. See a board certified orthopedist for exam and treatment. Best of luck!
