In brief: Bad Trouble!

Pancreatitis is known as one of the most painful conditions.
The name refers to a state of inflammation of the pancreas. The common causes or viral infection, alcohol irritation, triglyceride irritation, and infrequently from a bile stone. Another common cause is simply "unknown" or idiopathic in medical jargon. Treatment is usually pain meds, antibiotics and IV fluids. Nothing by mouth.

Gallstones and alcohol are responsible for most cases of acute pancreatitis, with near-equal incidence (depending on the community). If the episode is severe and due to stones, emergent ERCP performed by gastroenterologists may improve outcomes.

In brief: Inflamed pancreas.

The pancreas is located just below your stomach in front of the spine.
It produces Insulin as well as the enzymes that digest food. Inflammation is almost always due to gallstones or alcoholism. Most cases resolve with few problems after a short hospital stay, but serious (life-threatening) problems can occur. If due to gallbladder problem, we recommend surgery after the episode resolves.
