What is the difference between coronary artery disease and ischemic heart disease?

Cause and result. Coronary artery disease (CAD) is presence of cholesterol plaque on arteries supplying the heart. If arteries are not blocked completely by the plaque, then the heart function can be normal. In this cause it is only coronary artery disease. If the heart muscle is damaged by blocked arteries and the heart function is compromised, it is called ischemic heart disease (ihd). CAD is the cause of ihd.
