Why can I hear my heart beat in my ears sometimes?

Carotid Artery. The arteries of the head, specifically branches of the carotid artery, pass very close to the ear canal. When it is quiet, you can hear the echos of this blood vessel as it pulsates. It is normal.
Tympanic artery. One common reason for being able to hear your heart rate is because you are hearing the bloos in the tympanic (eardrum) artery.
